World Designs WD GOLDThe Hi-Fi World DIY Supplement ArchiveIn 1993 Hi-Fi World published its first DIY Supplement. This innovative guide featured projects for equipment that you just could not buy in Hi-Fi Shops. For example Issues 2 & 3 gave design and construction details for a three way, high efficiency speaker system using separate enclosures for bass and mid-hf, an active bookshelf speaker based on a cheap, readily available commercial design, a valve amplifier based around the classic Mullard 5-20 and a valve based line level preamplifier! These DIY Supplements quickly gained an avaricious following, doing much to boost the readership of Hi-Fi World at a time when it was becoming very different in outlook to the run-of-the-mill hi-fi mags. In fact Hi-Fi World's DIY section took off in such a big way that it quickly overtook the magazine itself with readers buying just to get at the next project in the design series. With designers such as Andy Grove (now at Audio Note) and Dominic Baker (who went on to join Focal), the DIY supplements were no amateur affair. Each project was thought through and designed using high quality materials to give stunning performance. Here, for the first time, were complete kits for the home constructor that delivered sound quality that was not only equal to, but more often than not bettered, commercially available equivalents. Unfortunately only avid readers who collected these supplements at the time have been able to refer back to these outstanding, and often innovative, projects. This is, however, the heritage of World Designs and we felt that these supplements should be made available to anyone who is interested in these projects, or just wants to refer back to the original design details of kits that they have built. We have, therefore, scoured the annals of Hi-Fi World and scanned nearly all these supplements so that you can easily browse through them. We call this archive 'WD Gold' and have given you the choice to either view the archive on-line or from a CDROM (the latter available from our Catalog). The on-line WD Gold Archive is being constantly updated, both with older projects as we discover them and with all the new designs appearing in Hi-Fi World today and into the future. Discover these gems now by following this link to WD GOLD. |
