Re: SME & Garrard

At the risk of having another post deleted - for anyone contemplating buying an idler or d/d, Greg's last post encapsulates the difference between buying one or other of the superbly engineered plug...

Re: Dark Voice 336SE h/amp

Colin,
that's a good price, if your into classical then Mezzo is seriously good, the sound is HD. Needed to get a new box from Orange and they give a month free of all the pay channels.

There is...

Re: Dark Voice 336SE h/amp

Greg,
did all that with the 650s' years ago. Like I said in my post I always preferred speakers to cans. Sold the WAD h/amp, why design a h/amp which only uses 1 valve? Really liked my Bada, after...

Re: Dark Voice 336SE h/amp

First the mistake, second the really good news and third the bizarre.

(1) I don't know how but I totally misread the value of pins 1&4 on the 6SN7 valve. Yes I know about lifting one leg of a...

Re: Dark Voice 336SE h/amp

The Philips/Mullard6080 stays at the moment. Tried the GE 6080, terrible harshness after changing pins 1 & 4 from 1M to 100k Z foil. will likely change back to 1m PRP.

Re: Dark Voice 336SE h/amp

Second mod, as suggested on another forum - de-activated the pre-amp part of the circuit, not dark at all now and voice is so detailed now, almost 3D.

By accident I found a source for K73-16...

Re: Dark Voice 336SE h/amp

I tried a very simple mod I saw on another forum - removed the cathode resistors, pins 3&6 and replaced with LEDS, HLMP-6320 HP sub miniatures, achieving a steadier biasing voltage - it works.

Natalie Merchant UK tour

I'm on the Natalie Merchant mailing list - she has a UK tour coming up and she's not playing the big venues or cities.

Lo and behold she has a gig coming up in Brighton at St. George's church,...

Re: Disappointing Audiolab

Both of you are missing the point - the audio world, especially analogue are trapped in the past. Active cooling didn't exist in any form as little as 15 years ago and now it does.

Greg - the...

Re: Disappointing Audiolab

Just tonight saw that Massdrop is doing an Alex Cavalli designed h/amp @ $250. and designed in - convection cooling,it's about time. It has an ss and a valve section and uses a single 6992 valve.

Re: Disappointing Audiolab

Greg,
I've seen loads of posts about on different forums that state - mosfets are best when run hot. What I've never seen is any empirical evidence to back this up or any empirical evidence to show...

Re: Dark Voice 336SE h/amp

Phil,
yes I might well use a shunted pot but also the cheap Chinese stepped atts. have a good reputation used by a member on this forum and by many on diyaudio.

If I revert to just using the D/V...

Re: Disappointing Audiolab

Phil,
this thread prompts me to upend my Kenwood deck and change at least all the PSU caps, after all they are 30 years old.

Richard, I remember years ago reading that for every 10C temp. drop it...

Re: BBC scraps plans to turn off FM

Years ago the Swedes decided that until something 'better' came along they were going to stay with FM. Of course it helps that Sweden is a very flat country.

When I lived in Rotterdam, my friend...

Re: Dark Voice 336SE h/amp

Bob,
I'm very pleased with the D/V and that it can be used as a pre-amp. A reply on diyaudio suggests I can use a 10K pot/att. I certainly couldn't use this 250K pot for pre-amp use as the only...

Re: Dark Voice 336SE h/amp

A question for the wise ones - the pot is 250K and the resistor to pin 1 on the pot is 100K is this value related to that of the pot, I need to know before I order different resistors in the signal...

Re: Maplins going under as well

Bob,
good red wine doesn't taste like vinegar. When I met my partner Angela she made the same comment about red wine. Many Brits copied what the French bought, this was decades ago and found that...

Re: Maplins going under as well

Bob,
they didn't always sell 'Chinese crap' and don't forget why so many UK companies failed - because they produced down to a price point instead of pursuing quality like Germans and Japanese.

I...

Re: Maplins going under as well

Bob,
I intend to pose this question on a specialist electrician's forum, it may not fly, I'll have to see, what I don't need is anything like a fridge temp. Certainly in the cold winter months I...

Dark Voice 336SE h/amp

Just heard it's on it's way, now I await the EU Customs charges when it arrives

Shame that WAD never thought to do any point-to-point designs, so much easier to mod. As an OTL it will get...
