Re: WD KT88VA XL build (steamboat)

I'm going to rebuild my WD88VA (integrated) with my favourite components (Kiwame, JJ electrolytics, Elna Silmic etc.) and with the XL upgrade.
C9a, C12a and C13a are 1.5uF. I would like to use 2.2uF...

Re: Wanted - Mullard GZ34

The Sovtek 5AR4 is a very good new production alternative. I prefer it by a wide margin to the JJ GZ34. For less demanding applications the Mullard GZ30 (CV2748) is a much more affordable option than...

Re: Making changes to PSU II

Hi Greg,

Your post was a great read and struck a chord with me as our stories have many similarities. As you may recall I built a WAD 300B PP clone five years ago, with a great deal of help from...

Re: Valve rolling for WAD 84

To celebrate the complete rebuild of my WDKEL84 (Kiwame resistors, JJ, Elna Silmic and Musicap capacitors, RHRP8120 and 11DQ10 diodes), I bought a pair of cryogenically treated Tungsram ECF80s. I...

Re: KEL84 query.

Another KEL84 query: I would like to try mine in triode mode. Do I simply disconnect the UL wire from the OPT and connect the screen grid to the anode (pin marked grey/pink to black/red), or is there...

Re: KEL 84 rebuild.

Nice to hear this can be solved without hassle. The filing job wasn't something to look forward to.

Re: KEL 84 rebuild.

I had exactly the same problem when I bought the (then) new PCB model several years ago. My solution was to file down the valve base legs until they fitted, which was a hell of a job. I wish I had...

Re: Vanilla K5881 upgrades

I soldered the valve sockets on an Aikido cathode follower PCB today and I remembered the advice you gave in this thread. It works miraculously. If done this way the pins fit perfectly without...

Re: heater current capacity of PSU3?

I'm using a WD PSU3 mains tx with John Broskie's Janus PSU(rectification by diodes) and an Aikido CF . I would like to try the rectifier valve option, but as I'm thinking of a GZ34, I would need a...

Re: Impressions on a XL upgrade

Hi,

After doing the upgrade I went back to the original orange drop capacitors. It's a view not commonly held on this forum, but I wasn't quite happy with the Soniqs caps either.

Re: KiT88 Upgrade Recommendations

Hi Jaz,

Take a look at Michael Percy's website
http://www.percyaudio.com/Catalog.pdf

and you'll see that the Caddock TF020 resistors are much cheaper than the Z-foils. I use them (with Alps...

Or you could build a clone of the WAD300B PP, as David and I did.

Question Re: Shunt Vol Pot Mod

Hi Greg,

I finished the Aikido a couple of days ago and it's getting better by the hour.
For critical resistors I used Kiwames; input and output caps Mundorf silver/oil; C6 and C9 Auricaps....

Re: Shunt Vol Pot Mod

Hi,

I started with a simpler circuit:

I had the best result with Mundorf silver/oil input caps; as output...

Re: Shunt Vol Pot Mod

Hi Greg,

I tried both outputs of the Creek, and for some reason I prefer the sound of the low output one (a warmer, more vibrant quality - purely subjective I'm sure).

I'm still very much...

Re: Shunt Vol Pot Mod

Thanks Richard. It's very useful to have it all in a neat table. I've been experimenting with resistor values for some time now and in the end I settled on 68K with a 20K pot to accommodate the low...
