Re: Simple Mains Filter and Spike Suppressor

Hello Phil,

It should help with both but don't expect it to be cast iron a cure all. Depending on the nature of the cause they can be helpful but for airborne RF the valves and all components can...

Re: WD88VA didn't survive move

Why not just get a pack off ebay?
Probably quicker.

Re: recapping speakers

I have no personal experience but I noticed a while back that Mundorf do bipolar electrolytics for crossovers, 2 types I think. If you wanted to stay with electrolytics they might be worth a look.

Re: WAD Kt 88 our integrated schematic

That is not generally how it works, anything you do while working for a company is the property of that company. It does not matter whether it is physical or intellectual work, the employee get...

Re: recapping speakers

Hello Stuart.

Bipolar electrolytic caps sound poor anywhere in crossovers in my opinion. Obviously a 60uF film cap would be huge, I would go with a new 47uF 'lytic and then make up the difference...

Re: KT5881 valve change

Hello Gary,
May I ask why you thought the KT66s would be a suitable replacement, were you told this by someone?

John/anyone,
Recently I joined and then left a valve and valve amp group on...

Re: Kt5881 bias

Hello Gary,

Different valves, and all components come to that, make a difference. Sometimes very subtle, sometimes more obvious. If you prefer the Sovtek then they are better for you. I have...

Re: Cv181

Hello acorn,

You are advertising somewhat "specialist" valves and I believe that the WD forum is fairly quiet these days. Are you offering these valves anywhere else?
I think you would probably...

Re: KT88s

It depends BOB,

Are they the current production Svetlana or the old "original" St. Petersburg winged C ?
If they are winged C then I would do a bit of research as these are becoming quite sort...

Re: Fixing tear in HDA driver

Hi Adrian,

I have not personally handled a HDA driver but I would suggest a glue that to some degree matches the characteristics of the cone material, ie paper for a paper driver. If the cone is...

WD phono load

Hello all,

Regarding passive pre's etc, could someone tell me the minimum load for the WD phono?
I'm not concerned for myself, my home made one is shunted 47K which I'm sure is fine. It would all...

Re: Screened lead

Hello Greg,

The silver wire I used was from HiFi Collective. It is HGC branded in their "hook up wire" section. I used 0.5mm as it is only for signal use. I expect the same stuff or similar is...

Re: Screened lead

Hello all,

Should anyone be interested, I now have fitted in my Phono (from PCB to o/p sockets) solid silver single core in PTFE sleeving. No hum issues.

In my KaT88, as these amps are known...

Re: KEL84 v KT88

Hi Richard,

I would have thought most professionally made hifi, once over 5 years old would be looking at similar depreciation. Add in the fact that WD is not what could be considered a famous...

Re: KEL84 v KT88

Ah, Richard beat me to it but I agree.

By all means speak to IPL but unless you listen at nightclub volume I'm sure the combination will be fine. Don't complicate the issue by changing 2 things at...

Re: Pre II cathode follower query

Hi Adriana,

Not sure what you mean by "cap discharge noise" but if the noise is louder than the music then I really don't think that it is a failing capacitor. That will typically give a sound...

Re: Pre II cathode follower query

Hi Adrian,

I would have thought that it would be perfectly safe to take the cap out of circuit but leave the resistor on the offending channel. See if that seems to cure the problem. Then you know...

Re: KEL84 v KT88

I never had any hum problems with my KEL84, it was dead quiet. Unless you mean mechanical transformer noise BOB but that was cured by mounting the mains transformer on rubber grommets.

As to...

Re: Pre II cathode follower query

Looks like separate R-C filtering has been added to each channel, as far as can be seen at least. Could potentially improve sound. Can you see the value of the (large green) resistors?

Phil.

Re: Screened lead

Hi Greg,

What about using the 2 cores of a twin cable for left and right of one input. You would have to strip the screen back a little further than normal but I don't think that should be a...

Re: Screened lead

I may give solid silver, single core a try in my phono. As long as hum isn't an issue it would be goods I think. I re-wired my passive pre with that a while back to good effect although it did seem...

Re: Screened lead

Greg,

When I was looking today, I saw that Van Damme do some thinner stuff. 4.5mm and 3.5mm if I remember. These are twin core but does that matter? Could you not just snip off the second core and...
