Re: Kel84 transformer

Ah. So basically they were inferior quality transformers in those days.
Possibly not vacuum impregnated windings so the copper windings could shake in the magnetic field or more unlikely a bit of...

Re: Kel84 transformer

hmmm steel chassis if an old one? Do you think that mounting on rubber grommits not only provided a bit of compliance but raised the laminations enough to isolate it from being magnetically coupled...

Re: Pre 3 balanced out - which sockets?

This is timely.
I am about to embark on the big rebuild of the EL34 power amps as a single chassis stereo amp, and one of the features I would like to include is a balanced input alongside the...

Re: KEL84 Mains Transformer (or similar).

Failing that VVT transformers will almost certainly have something to fit physically and electrically.
And don't dismiss philip at Bluebell Audio who does a good range of the hammond gear.
By all...

Re: kel84 halved on two

So if you have the skills to wind your own mains transformers etc why not do just that?
Sell the KEL84 to help finance the project.
Buy a pair of output transformers off matthew or you can buy a...

Re: kel84 halved on two

My first comment would be.............if it ain't broke dont fix it as you are unlikely to get any real sonic advantages out of this.
Now thats over with and you want to rebuild the circuit as 2...

Re: Renovation/construction issues

Interesting stuff.
We can't have a tiled roof anyway due to height and slope restrictions so its a take on a flat roof with a designed in slope to allow rainwater to run off. There are issues with...

I'm still at the costing/when can you actually get a team of skilled trades together etc stage of the proposed upstairs refurb here.
I was reassured by my...

Re: KEL84 v KT88

Hmmmm theres another way to look at this.
When I built my Kt88 power amp in 2007 the basic power amp cost 750 give or take, so in terms of actual depreciation it hasn't had such a big hit.
That...

Re: Where to buy valves

Someone else on here may be able to give a definitive answer but I was led to believe that much of the rebranded Russian EL84 (Svetlana, Electroharmonix etc) were the 6P14 type which as far as I can...

Re: Cv378

Does it have to be a CV378? It's equivalent to a GZ37 or a GZ33 would have a higher current rating.
Hope that helps a bit.

Re: WAD Pre II Conversion to Cathode Follower

There's a solution, and guaranteed to work. What's not to like?

Next months edition of HFW should carry the review Matthew if you haven't been informed already. I look forward to it.

Re: WAD Pre II Conversion to Cathode Follower

I did a 9 pin broskie ACF job in a pre 3 case. as far as i know they are the same size as the pre 2 case.
It all fitted nicely inside, I also got the Hi Fi collective...

Re: SME & Garrard

I had one of the brazilian Direct drive garrard turntables back in the 80s. Not brilliant but did the job for me at the time.
As far as I know, the current owner of SME, cadence, is owned by an...

Re: SME & Garrard

IGB Graiente SA were the owners of the garrard brand greg.
They were being made in brazil in the end.
So its just an accquisition of the name from the current registered owners.
The Loricraft...

I guess for any sort of high value item as Philip described, the old "Caveat Emptor" advice is paramount.
A genuine seller would never object to a purchaser asking to...

You could try "semi balanced" cables to the power amp. thats using 2 core screened cable, using the inner cores for the signal circuit and connecting only one...

Re: KEL84XL build

Looking at that preamp I reckon its probably some sort of hybrid with an octal cathode follower. 180R seems a bit low but not unfeasible from such a CF. which should match into the WD inputs just...

Re: KEL84XL build - now Mains Hum!

If you get a signal when only the centre pin of an RCA phono plug is connected, there MUST be a return to signal earth back to the source. It's a basic and simple rule of electrical circuits. End of....
