Re: Another set of secondhand speakers

Hi Stuart,

The Tannoys sound "just right" to me and a good step forward of other commercial speakers I've had. I chose them in a shop with a smaller listening room and my thoughts didn't change...

Re: Another set of secondhand speakers

Hi Stuart, yes John Caswell and I had a listen to the Ushers a few years ago at Bristol and agreed the big ones were one of the best at the show. Not cheap though. I went shopping for speakers 2...

Re: Help needed Kit 88

Hi K,

It should be fine with a short interconnect from the volume pot to the sub. Perhaps connect at the pcb and run out to 2 of the un-used RCAs on the back panel.

It is a passive pre though...

Re: Help needed Kit 88

Hi K,

As Kit88 uses a passive "pre" section the best/easiest way may depend on one or two things;

Is you Kit88 wired for all inputs including Tape In/Out and what is the volume pot is it the...

Re: Help needed Kit 88

Hi John, welcome K,

John, I didn't wire my tape sockets and switch up, but looking at Kit88 Tape Out it seems that it wouldn't be controlled by the vol control and would give the full level out of...

Re: KAT88 cathode resistors

Hi Phil,

Yes that sounds a good result! The anode V will have dropped a little due to the increased load.

Re: Rarely Seen WAD, Andy Groves Designed, IC Phonostage

Certainly the supplied kits were sometimes revised/corrected from the earlier magazine articles (Phono2 for instance) so compare his circuit to the one you got with the kit John and the magazine.

Re: Rarely Seen WAD, Andy Groves Designed, IC Phonostage

Thanks John, I understand now. Those RCA resistors would be fitted from signal pin to ground shell. That resistor then appears in parallel to the 100R loading resistor inside the amp and lowers the...

Re: Phono 11 modifications

Yes, a cap meter is useful to confirm or check values if you do much of this.

Keep in mind that any decent designer will have "voiced" his product to give a good balance for the money available....

Re: Phono 11 modifications

Hello and welcome!

I have some of those orange drops, same size as you say, from my phono builds.

The smaller ones are marked in nF as 100nK250 (= 0.1uF 10% 250V) and the larger in uF as...

Re: Rarely Seen WAD, Andy Groves Designed, IC Phonostage

That sounds a plan and it will be interesting to hear how it goes.
Two things,
Making it switchable MC/MM; you could indeed make R1 switchable 100R/47k, R3 switchable 56k/5k6 (and C1 switchable...

Re: Rarely Seen WAD, Andy Groves Designed, IC Phonostage

Hi John,

Yes the April 94 issue details the items to change for MC or MM. A quick check to confirm the setting of yours at the moment would be to see which op-amps are fitted. For the Hana you...

Re: Rarely Seen WAD, Andy Groves Designed, IC Phonostage

Hi John, Thanks for the kind offer. How's your phono built, for MC or MM?

Reading the article there are adjustments you can make. It can be set for MC or MM by changing IC1, R1, R3, and the low...

Re: 6N5P/6AS7/6080 any ideas?

Hi Stuart,
WAD sold the 6080SE kit amplifier in 1993 using this valve putting out 4W single ended per valve section.
It's a big twin triode described as "a rugged beast that will last for years"....

Re: Rarely Seen WAD, Andy Groves Designed, IC Phonostage

Very interesting thanks for posting John. Are the chips AD797 and Ad 743? If so it looks like the phono amp covered in 2 supplement articles in 1993 and 1994 and available on Matthew's Platinum CD...

Re: Shuguang 274B

Hi Neil,

You may be able to find a specific data sheet for the Chinese 274 but it doesn't look promising as Kat6550 runs the rectifiers quite hard.

274A and B are early rectifiers and less...

Re: KAT88 cathode resistors

Hi Phil, I was an early builder and found the KT88 plates running 40w and glowing red in the dark. Increased cathode Rs from 150 to 220 which gave 32w and fine. WAD then increased grid bias via the...

Re: Quad ESL 57's with a Audax HD-3P Gold Dome Piezo Tweeter.

Try an amp with tone controls to improve the lack of bass and treble without (hopefully) losing their good qualities.

Re: X class cap

Phil, looking some more, that Quad network of 47nF seried with 100R across LN is in their pre and tuners.
Their much larger 606 power amp supply uses a single 330nF...

Re: X class cap

If you wire caps across AC mains switch contacts they will conduct a tiny current even when the switch is open. I found that 40 years ago suppressing the mains switch on a Thorens turntable. It...
