Re: KEL84XL build

Hello Richard,

The KEL84 can be very quiet regarding hum so you should not despair. Is the hum you have equal on both channels ? If it is worse on one side or the other that may give you a clue as...

Re: KEL84XL build

Hello Richard,

I remember when I first built my KEL84 it was a bit of a culture shock after the Leak Stereo 20 I had been using for a couple of decades. I thought it was a bit lean sounding...

Re: KEL84XL build

Richard,

All electrical devices need a circuit to operate.
Would you expect a torch to light up if you only connected the positive end of the battery?

Re: Disappointing Audiolab

Could be old stock I suppose Richard, who knows ?

I think I am leaning towards changing the caps. As I said, the unit is reasonably well built and the sound is good enough for me as I am mainly a...

Re: BBC scraps plans to turn off FM

Yes, I heard about this on the radio news yesterday. Good news I think. I'm sure the future will ultimately be digital but not crappy DAB with it's low data rate and mono transmissions.
MP2 is a...

Re: Maplins going under as well

Hi baggy,

Although the bulk of Tannoy production is in China now, I believe that the owners saw sense at the last moment and kept production of the Prestige Series in Scotland. They obviously...

Re: Disappointing Audiolab

Hi Richard,

I have been doing a bit of "research" and if you can believe all you read, a few things have come to light.

It looks like other Audiolab owners have had similar problems. I have...

Re: Which do you prefer?

Hello Brian,

I have only heard a K5881 briefly and never compared the 2 but you could argue that if you have no particular speakers in mind, the KiT88, being more powerful is a more versatile amp....

Re: Hello everyone...

Hello Brian and welcome.

You may already be aware but I have seen reports here and there of people who claim to have successfully re-inflated those tweeters. No personal experience.

Re: Disappointing Audiolab

Hello Richard,

The failing ones are Lelon brand, not one I'm familiar with. I replaced them with Nichicons.
I didn't look too close but I think they are all the same brand.
I kind of thought...

Disappointing Audiolab

As it is out of warranty, in curiosity, I opened up my Audiolab Q DAC. I was confronted with 2 electrolytic caps in the PSU section with bulging tops. Needless to say, at two and a half years old, I...

Re: WDKT88VA Rubuild Time

I'm the same as BOB, using JJs although the only others I have tried in my amp (KiT88) are also Svet 6550s. I would not say the JJs are "better", just that they had a warmer presentation that I...

Re: Happy Birthday Bob!

Happy birthday for yesterday BOB.

Talking of strong beer, my grandmother was rather fond of barley wine which I tried but found pretty foul. I don't like the very strong ones, between 4.5% and 5%...

Re: Maplins going under as well

Hello Stuart,

It sounds like an interesting project you have in mind but I will have to decline. Although I have designed a few simple circuits over the years, I would not call myself a designer,...

Re: Maplins going under as well

Hello Stuart,

I think there is a slight misunderstanding here. I was not praising my mobile phone, it is old and a very cheap model (mobile phones do not excite me). What I was trying to express...

Re: KEL84 advice -please...

I would second what BOB says,

The only test equipment you need is a decent quality multimeter. There are relatively high voltages in the amp so for your own safety you don't really want to be...

Re: Maplins going under as well

I agree Maplin was doomed but I think we should not be too hasty to blame people for not building stuff. Who would build an electronic egg timer on vero board when everyone has a smart phone in their...

Re: KLS14 speakers - any updates ?

If you built them with cheap standard crossover parts, a good start would be replacing them with Mills resistors and some better capacitors of your choice.

Really, what you need to ask yourself...

Re: KAT88 cathode resistors

Update.

I opened the amp up Friday and measured 510 on the anodes which worked out to a dissipation of about 29.5 W.
On the strength of this I thought I would go for 150 ohm resistors. This...
