Re: WAD Kit 6550 hum

Hi JPPGWAD,

Check the transformers for any numbers or maker.
There is a thread here with some info but there may have been different suppliers or a change of design during the supply of the kits,...

Re: photobucket image retrieval

Yes a wake-up call as to the ethics of some web companies I think. I too lost my pictures and all the links went dead when Virgin deleted my web space. It was only a few MB hosting a hundred or so...

Re: Disappointing Audiolab

Hi Phil, sounds unbelievable they'd still be trying to save pennies using bad electrolyte. I wonder if they may simply be some old stock of those bad caps (slower moving large ones?) that have now...

Re: Disappointing Audiolab

Hi Phil,

Yes caps for automotive and telecoms are usually expensive and have very long life specs don't they. Some cars from the 80's are now having problems with failed electronic ecu...

Re: Disappointing Audiolab

You'll know that any electrolytic working within its rating should have lasted much longer than that Phil. The best are the likes of Panasonic FC 105 degree 5000 hours which equates to 73 years at 35...

Re: WD KT88VA XL build (steamboat)

I'm going to rebuild my WD88VA (integrated) with my favourite components (Kiwame, JJ electrolytics, Elna Silmic etc.) and with the XL upgrade.
C9a, C12a and C13a are 1.5uF. I would like to...

Re: KEL84 advice -please...

Yes indeed, as Bob says for power testing, though you can use much lower rating 7W or 10W 6R8 or 8R2 etc from Maplins for a few pence for checking through voltages after the build. Easiest way to get...

Re: KEL84 advice -please...

Yes if the voltages check ok it should be fine. Remember to connect 8 ohm resistors or old speakers to each channel before firing up without any input signal. The inputs are best shorted with shorted...

Re: Phono3S it's humming again.

Well done Andy. Almost exactly the same thing caught me out too. My Thorens is a later one with (18V?) mains transformer and I had the TX sitting on the floor right under the WD3 set up. Moving it a...

Re: Maplins going under as well

Hi Baggus, yes around 20 years ago Tandy were pretty good for a range of components in the UK, small local shops, sort of a Maplins-lite I suppose. My favourite interconnects are still their Archer...

Re: Maplins going under as well

Yes got to agree with Bob, before Maplin in Nottm we had several trade outlets inc RS, then a couple of smaller retail component shops, and Tandy. Maplin came and all the others except RS closed.

Re: Phono3S it's humming again.

It might be worth re-checking the earthing arrangement.

As standard Phono case "earth" post is actually signal ground and is connected to mains earth in PSU via 100R.

PSU case earth post is...

Re: WD 25T plans needed - please.

The original WD25T articles are May and June 2006 which followed from 3 previous WD25A articles.
The WD25T V2 articles are listed as Designing Speakers Part 17 and 18 in July and Aug 2008 and a...

Re: WD 25T plans needed - please.

Hi Richard, the Platinum CD has the 2006 articles and plans and the 2008 V2 articles. There's quite a lot of reading around the speakers which I'm sure I'd want to do if thinking of building. Plenty...

Re: Phono 3 Trimmer

You're welcome, the same hook up and settings can be used to check Phono3 RIAA accuracy by sweeping sine frequency from the sig gen whilst watching for any deviation from flat on the scope. It should...

Re: Phono 3 Trimmer

Hi craigtone and welcome.

The test/adjustment set up is,

Sig gen > inverse RIAA filter > Phono3 > scope loaded with 50K (to mimic pre-amp)

Set the scope input to display 1 or 2V p-p sine...

Re: Vintage Goldring G800. Pleasantly surprised!

Hi Andy, yes, my first proper hifi cart around 1976 was a G800E eliptical! Brother had the reviewers' favourite M75EDII which had a bit more detail iirc but the Goldring had a "meatier" sound. I gave...

Re: 300bpse

Hi Andy and welcome,
Yes valves are prime suspects, then electrolytic caps then resistors. It could also be a joint gone dry. Obscure stuff too, I once had an HT choke repeatedly go short circuit...

Re: Life after Squeezebox - any advice?

Hi Stuart, I think I'd get flac replay sorted as first step. You can download all the free software you need to make flacs from CDs which would be a good learning curve and give you a few flac albums...

Just a thought Stuart, where are you with flac at the moment? Are you already using it as a source or is the whole thing a new venture?

Re: Life after Squeezebox - any advice?

Yes.

If you use your system and room to monitor it will be different to the LP mastering and CD mastering which are already available so why put yourself through it?

Mine isn't a huge library...

Re: Life after Squeezebox - any advice?

Stuart, I can see completely where you're coming from if you have most of your music on vinyl. Flacs on a hard drive are a very attractive option for the practical reasons you say. It looks like a...
