Re: WAD KiT 88 to WD KT88?

Hi Fred, good to hear from you.

Have you tried new/good valve replacements? Humming and the voltages being off can be due to valves drawing the wrong current due to age. That would be an easy...

Re: Hi-Fi Journeys

Hi Greg, thanks for sharing the first instalment. I for one was waiting for the rest before joining in. A few dates might help put it in perspective, I think we're of similar age ("born in the 50's"...

Re: KT88 Intermittent problem

Hi Alasdair, crikey, 3 years since this thread started! Well done fingers crossed you've nailed it. These things can be a devil and often turn out to be a bad joint. I fixed one once which was doing...

Squeezebox Touch with Arcam IRDAC and IRDAC II on EDO usb

I couldn't find much about using these together and not having used EDO/usb I wasn't even sure they would connect. So this is just a quick note to say I have both these dacs running on 2 separate...

Re: Squeezebox Touch Power Supply Problem or a tale of 2 PSUs

Hi Al, thanks for the info. A bit of googling seems to agree with you about no sound difference, it seems to be that the psu is good enough as the Touch has further regulation inside,...

Re: KEL84 from the recycling centre

The Quads are lovely and seeing them still brings back nostalgic memories :)

Kel 84 is a really good amp and well worth rebuilding. Look for easy to drive 8 ohm speakers as number one priority,...

Re: KEL84 from the recycling centre

Yes, hello and welcome :) that was a great deal!

I thought I did well getting a pair of Quad II monoblocs from a junk shop window in 1977 for 8 (about 50 today) when they were out of fashion!

Squeezebox Touch Power Supply Problem or a tale of 2 PSUs

Hi all, I recently bought another SBT second-hand to use with the vintage system in the other room. It arrived in good condition with SBT unit, original infra red remote and correct power supply...

Re: JAN 6072A valves

Hi Mel, Bob,

It's a 9 pin twin triode and the only WAD design I can recall that used it was the original Stereo chassis 300BPP where one valve was used, with a section for each channel, as input...

Re: Valve Life

Hi Mel,

EL84 are run quite hard and tend to run hot so 2-3000 hours. ECF80 probably 10-20000 hours and ECC83 in Phono 3 are only running at 1mA so probably 50000+ hours.

3000 hours is only a...

Re: Testing valves

Hi Phil,

Yes, as Bob says, you'll notice when they're wearing out. The sound becomes "bleached" with weak bass and treble. You'd pick it up on a tester (I have one) but I haven't tried scoping...

Re: KiT/KaT6550 and fuse blowing inrush current

Hi Philip, Bob,

Yes it was. The build sheets show 500R but that gave too much standing current with some various mains voltages around the country and the plates glowed red. Whether the build...

Re: KiT/KaT6550 and fuse blowing inrush current

Hi Philip,
I'd check balancing resistors have been added to the anodes. They'll increase supply impedance and, importantly, help balance the current through the 2 sections of each rectifier, 47R...

Re: Zobel network on HD3S

Hi Ian, if the 10R were across the output by itself it would be a load at audio frequencies, but with the 0.1uF cap in series it means it's only a load at supersonic frequencies (as only higher...

Re: WDXRS Supertweeters

Great to hear from you Peter!

What you say makes complete sense and gives a good explanation of Van's findings. The mention of "super tweeter" suggests high frequencies being added to a speaker...

Re: Zobel network on HD3S

Hi Sharky,

As I understand it (John or others feel free to correct!) it's a series RC network but doesn't really function as a Zobel in that it doesn't maintain the headphone's impedance (in a...

Re: Kef Corelli speakers

Thanks Colin. I tried Cricklewood and Falcon but there are only random values left in Alcaps, so I went with Mundorf Ecaps for the larger values and Vishay polyesters for the tweeters, and am very...

Re: The Puffin DSP phono/preamp

Hi Stuart,

The Puffin doesn't have a digital output as far as I can see so it would need to be fed into an ADC.

Digitise all the vinyl "flat" to its recorded RIAA as putting in any tone...

Re: Mundorf Mlytic HV caps

Thanks Matthew, yes I did look on here but found no Alcaps and polyprops are too large in 10uF and 30uF values. I was told Alcaps haven't been made for over a year so I'm sure a list of yours would...

Re: Mundorf Mlytic HV caps Kit/Kat88

That's good info and the new caps should provide better stability for the future life of the equipment.

These Mundorfs look good spec and with long life. Any problems fitting or...
