Re: Replacement for Usher S520 bass/mid driver

No need to apologize Bob, I hadn't explained my thinking :D'oh!:

Just clicked that link again and there're now 3 pairs on! This pair (direct link below) is even cheaper with damaged cabs - may...

Re: Replacement for Usher S520 bass/mid driver

Bob, if the engine on your car blows these days you'll weigh up all the options. Getting it fixed probably isn't one of them. It will take a long time, cost a lot, and may not work well again anyway....

Re: Wanted: 10H/180mV choke suitable for WAD 2A3PSE

Crikey how small is the original? These chokes have a tough life. I see HFC have listed that uprated one for the Glasshouse 300B. The original Glasshouse one was reasonably spec'd at 200mA but...

Hi Greg, this looks pretty much ideal if it will fit,

Re: Wanted: 10H/180mV choke suitable for WAD 2A3PSE

Hi Greg, the choke is under-rated. The circuit draws 210mA and the choke drops 45V so its DCR is 214R. I'd be looking for a choke 10H 250mA 200DCR

Re: Pre Amp wire

Ah, well my present pre uses a 40mm Alps Black as an active volume control in the feedback loop of a gain stage... (not sure how far that gets me though!) :D Those Bastinis look amazing btw

Re: Pre Amp wire

Haha yes lead chocolate weights courtesy of Kwikfit! They gave me a box when they had to swap over to non-lead a few years ago

Re: Pre Amp wire

Yes I've done a few, with and without the shunt pot resistors, and use enamelled copper wire. I use isolated phonos, an ally box for overall screening, and earth the box and pot (for safety and to...

Re: WAD 300B PSE Coupling Cap Size

Hi Paul, R3 is the anode load of the 6AU6.
The coupling you'd need to adjust would be C2 into ECC82 gridleak R8.
As standard this is 0.22uF into 1M = 0.7Hz.
Using 0.01uF would give 16Hz. This is...

Re: WD88XL switch off hiss

Hi Alasdair,
Firstly, could it be any pre-amp or source connected that is doing this? If any are connected turn them off first of course.
Then you could try to locate the area of the problem by...

Re: K5881 Mk1 mods

Hi, yes if you're not hearing any distortion or getting motorboating all should be well. Great car, I bet that took longer to build than the 5881! Best film I saw last year was Ford vs Ferrari, I...

Re: K5881 Mk1 mods

Hi Phil and welcome, do you have a Dax Cobra? I digress :) but mostly agree with Greg and Phil and would say,

1) the input cap will block DC from a source but that's unlikely to be needed as the...

Re: New forum member

The valves should be good then but they run at max dissipation so keep and eye on the plates in a dark room for any red patches.

If the pcb comes out again consider increasing the first valve...

Re: PSU III transformer information.

Hi Philip, yes reading some more, the LM317 divider will also be part of the load. Using 240R at R1 results in 5mA or using 120R at R1 results in 10mA. Phono 3 uses 4.2mA.

LM317 TI data sheet...

Re: KiT/KaT6550 Power consumption.

Excellent Neil, no haven't tried it and don't have a smart meter, but that looks accurate as the amp has a 1.6A fuse fitted and occasionally blows it at switch-on so I figured something over an amp...

Re: PSU III transformer information.

Hi Bob, I know little about these but a look at the data sheet suggests a minimum 10mA load. The web design may be good but I wonder if the tiny 4 or 5mA load of Phono is enough? I may be reading the...

Morning Bob, thanks for the explanation and hope the new one is easier to implement. What regulator arrangement are you using?
