Re: KT88 choice

The original Gold Dragon KT88s in my WD88XL were still sounding good after 5 years, so they are a pretty good valve. I decided to try the new Genalex Gold Lion KT88s, which Stewart Gebbie at...

Re: KT88 Intermittent problem

After all this time, some more news.

After replacing the volume pot the problem more or less went away for a while but it then gradually returned. When it got too annoying I opened the amplifier...

Re: Vinyl cleaning gadgets

For many years I used the Pixall sticky tape roller in conjunction with a Goldring carbon fibre brush. The brush lifted dust up from the grooves but deposited it in a line - which the Pixall was...

Re: Stylus cleaning.

FYI, the most recent recommendation I have had from Wyndham Hodgson at Expert Stylus for stylus cleaning is to use alcohol-free lens cleaning fluid: spray a little on to a cotton bud and dab the...

Re: WD KEL84 Valves and cables

Valves: I found NOS RCA (rebranded Siemens) ECF80 were a good upgrade, better than the standard CVC ECF80 and also better than JJ.
Cables: internal signal cable - stay with standard cable, don't...

Re: KT88 Intermittent problem

Dear Folks,

After all this time I think I have finally solved the problem. I decided that if the problem was somewhere in or around the volume control, then rather than trying to precisely track...

Re: KT88 Intermittent problem

Dear Friends,
Thanks for the further suggestions. I can't give more feedback because I have been away a bit and also the problem is not happening enough at present to warrant the time to try to fix...

Re: KT88 Intermittent problem

Dear John,
I spoke too soon! After a week of completely trouble-free listening, I had slight crackles on the right channel at switch-on yesterday - but no further trouble. Then this morning I had...

Re: KT88 Intermittent problem

Dear John,
Sorry to be slow to reply. I don't have any test equipment apart from a multi meter, a mains tester screwdriver and pair of old speakers to connect to the amplifier when poking about with...

Re: KT88 Intermittent problem

Dear John,
Thanks for the advice. Needless to say, when I opened up the amplifier and connected it up it did not reproduce the fault. I poked around the relevant connections at the front of the...

KT88 Intermittent problem

Dear Folks,
Can anyone advise on a strange intermittent problem in my KT88 XL amplifier? Most of the time it works (and sounds) fine but sometimes (most commonly at switch on but occasionally after...

Re: KT88 construction problem

Dear Guys,
Thanks for the advice. I found that generally I was able to get good joints with the Antex and silver solder but the bit had to be clean and given time to get good and hot and (as you...

Re: KT88 construction problem

Dear Bob,
Thanks for your email. I think that the couple of dry joints were just caused by not being patient enough and rushing a bit - I've been soldering (on and off) for a long time and don't...

Re: KT88 construction problem

Dear Bob,
Thanks for the suggestions. I've checked and found a couple of dry joints, including one on the earth side of C9, which has got rid of the 'tap tap tap' sound, swishing noise and crackles...

Re: KT88 construction problem

Help! More problems! As previously reported, after switching wires as recommended by John C. the amplifier worked perfectly. Matthew then confirmed that the probable fault lay in reversed transformer...

Re: KT88 construction problem

Postscript
Further investigations by Matthew Snell found that some of the latest supplies of output transformers have the output connections reversed by mistake, making this the likely cause of my...

Re: KT88 construction problem

Dear Everyone,
Thanks for all your help.
In answer to Richard's questions, it's not my first kit - I haven't done lots but I built a KEL84XL previously and a Graham Slee Genera phono preamp. Years...

Re: KT88 construction problem

Dear Friends,
You will be relieved to know that the problem is now solved, all is well and it is sounding good.
I hadn't thought about the possibility of an open circuit on the relay wiring...

Re: KT88 construction problem

Dear Friends,
I tried swapping the L and R signal lead connections to the input tag board but the fault stayed on the right channel, so the fault must be 'downstream' of this connection. However I...

Re: KT88 construction problem

Dear John,
1. The channel which was playing up on dummy load was the left. It now works OK and sounds OK. The right channel worked OK on dummy load and all quoted voltages and resistances measure...

Re: KT88 construction problem

Another problem!

I connected up the amplifier to loudspeakers and switched on with high hopes. However although the left channel sounded good, the right channel was completely dead. I tried...

Re: KT88 construction problem

Dear John,

Thanks for your suggestions.

1. Resistances checked with valves removed - all about 230k ohm, assumed OK.
2. Reinserted valves, disconnected left channel feedback link - problem...

Re: KT88 construction problem

I have just measured the AC voltages across the dummy load terminals: a fraction of a volt on the right channel, 7 volts on the left channel.

Re: KT88 construction problem

Extra information: I checked it with the volume control turned down to zero, which effectively short circuits the inputs. The left channel load resistor still overheated. A little before the load...
