Re: Kel84 transformer

Like Phil, I made thick cardboard gaskets for the TXs on my steel chassis Kit88 and thought it was a little better. I got the idea from Morgan Jones book where he says steel chassis' induce currents...

Re: Rifa suppressors to avoid

A quick follow-up,

Re. Phil and Bob's comments about the mains delta cap; whilst sorting through the box for some bits over the w/e I found the last of my 5 RS 239668 delta caps in it's bag...

Re: Feedback

Hi Stuart, we've trodden similar paths by the sound of it, I loved my Pro9s and it's always interesting to hear how others got on with a change.

With speaker alignment there are so many variables...

Re: Feedback

Hi Stuart,

Yes the 300B monos had switchable on/off global fb.

I tried various amounts of global fb on my Kit88. From memory it had around 23dB as designed. Taking about 5dB off did sound more...

Re: Rifa suppressors to avoid

Hi Bob, yes I'm a fan of RS too and get much of my stuff there.
I can only relate my own experience which is of several failures going back to 1986 but Google "rifa capacitor failure" and you may...

Re: Disappointing Audiolab

Excellent and yes, a similar case with an amp of mine. I'd put off changing the mains filter caps as they still measured full uF and no signs of bulging. They were almost 30 years old though and I...

Re: Rifa suppressors to avoid

Ah yes, are they the delta caps in the mains filter Phil? If so they should be easy to keep an eye on. I had mine in for several years and they were no trouble. 20 years and I can understand a cap...

Rifa suppressors to avoid

This is the 2nd one of these I've had go in use and every one I've seen in equipment has already failed. I fitted this only 2 years ago from a pack of 5 from RS. Acrid smoke and the fuse blew a few...

Re: Disappointing Audiolab

Just thinking Phil that it may sound better anyway after you've replaced all the electros. I've done a dozen or so full re-caps the past few years and every one has sounded no worse or better/fresher.

Re: Pre 3 balanced out - which sockets?

Morning, yes as John says. Also a bit of a nightmare to fit retrospectively. The chassis holes needs opening out and paint removing and access is not good if the relay pcb is already soldered in....

Re: Pre 3 balanced out - which sockets?

Morning, These came with my XL kit and I had to enlarge the chassis hole a couple of mm from the regular RCA size. They look like Farnell/CPC but if you want to be sure of getting the WD ones Matthew...

Re: Disappointing Audiolab

Hi Phil, well all of my gear consists of commercial grade components but I get what you mean.

It will depend on space, money, and time comparing any alternatives I suppose and yes it would be good...

Re: Disappointing Audiolab

Annoying about the electros Phil.

The coupling caps may depend on what space you have available as polyprops seem only to be available in higher voltage and physical size. Much of audio seems to...

Re: Simple Mains Filter and Spike Suppressor

Yes, why go to all that trouble, just lobby EDF to go DC mains :D we used to have them in Nottingham when I was born. When I started work in the motor trade in the early 70's the old boys used to...

Re: WD88VA didn't survive move

Hi Wiggers,
Nothing obviously amiss, so, unless I'm missing something you can see, (and asuming you only have 3 good valves left) I'd fit a good pair to that channel and leave the other side empty,...

Re: KT5881 valve change

Hi Gary,

Some valves are interchangeable and some backwards/forwards compatible but you need to check very carefully.

5881 is a later family member of the 6L6 family. 6L6 was designed as an...

Morning Clive and welcome,

Re: KEL84 v KT88

Hi All, yes agreed with everyone so far.

I've owned Kit88 and WD88 and had a couple of Kel84 here for a listen over the years into previous Pro9TL transmission line speakers. Kel84 is a little...

Re: Help needed with Hum please!

Disregard the word "input" and just read ground as the connection to the smoothing cap neg on the drawings btw. (It refers to the original construction, where the chassis was ground and mains earth,...

Re: Help needed with Hum please!

Excellent :) A better place to earth the inputs may be 2 individual earth wires to the ground ends of the 100K first valve grid leaks thus separating them from any high currents in the ground...

Yes, worth re-checking, so remove all connections and check K5881 for 10R signal lift, the...
