Re: PRE II conversion

Many thanks for all the help and advice. The Pre II was converted to a CF many moons ago and then to a passive when I was in Cyprus and needed a new valve. I've been toying with going back to the CF...

Re: PRE II conversion

Thanks for that Greg, it's so long since I was last on here I forget where things are.
Regarding the .1uF 400v capacitor does it need to be an electrolytic as I don't have one in my spares box but I...

Re: MY Phono 3 has started bop bopping

Richard, did changing the C11/12 caps make much of a difference? And has anyone tried changing the C1/2 caps?
I fully understand the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" but I'm just curious to know if...

Re: MY Phono 3 has started bop bopping

Hi Richard,
Thanks for the constructive comments.
I did try an unfiltered extension first (this was the one that caused me to think that the power cable was at fault), there was still some motor...

Re: MY Phono 3 has started bop bopping

It turns out that the power cable WASNíT the problem! When I put the new cable in I didnít plug it in to the original location (itís behind my stand and difficult to get to) I plugged it into an...

Re: MY Phono 3 has started bop bopping

I had a look for anything similar but could only find one where someone had bought something from Russ Andrews and came in for some stick but I would like views on the viability of these, I can see...

Mains Filters and Conditioners

Regarding my mentioning mains conditioners, perhaps it would be better posting a new thread for 'mains filters and conditioners' in a more appropriate section, What do you Senior Members think would...

Re: MY Phono 3 has started bop bopping

The cable that I'd used was of the moulded at both ends type so I'm not going to start cutting it up to find out what had gone wrong. It did however start me thinking about fitting a mains...

Re: MY Phono 3 has started bop bopping

What was it that someone said about when you've eliminated all the logical things then what's left must be the answer (maybe Sherlock Holmes)? At around 3:00am it occurred to me that the only thing...

Re: MY Phono 3 has started bop bopping

I've had it several years and it's worked perfectly until the other day. It does get quite a lot of use partly because I have several hundred LPs and partly due to the appallingly bad programs on TV....

Re: MY Phono 3 has started bop bopping

Hi Bob,
I'm currently using a Quad 606, I have a pair of 300BPSE monoblocks but they're out on loan at the moment. I'm running everything through a passive pre that I built myself. The rest of the...

Re: MY Phono 3 has started bop bopping

Yes but my capacitor is 100uF 450V. I've just been switching a load of ECC83 valves around in the hope that it is a faulty one causing the problem but once again I've drawn a blank.

Re: MY Phono 3 has started bop bopping

Hi Richard,
Yes that's it and there is only one capacitor (0.1uF 250V) in the bank of 3 and those are in the inside ones (C1 & C2). Also I obviously don't have the associated switches but everything...

Re: MY Phono 3 has started bop bopping

Hi Bob, I did try the Capacitor in C4 and it made no difference. (this was in my post at 09.10am yesterday).
My circuit diagram does look more like 3S than 3 but there is no coupling capacitor...

Re: MY Phono 3 has started bop bopping

As it's something that I hadn't tried I made a new connecting cord just in case but once again it's made no difference.

I have been trying for over half an hour to upload my circuit diagram without success so I'll tray and explain the differences your Series 3 and my Series 3.
I think that all the...

Re: MY Phono 3 has started bop bopping

Hi Bob, I added the extra cap in C4 but it didn't make any difference. I have a nasty feeling that the answer is going to be very obvious and will make me feel a real idiot!
Do your papers on PSUll...

Hi Bob, I'll add the cap this morning. I would love to post photos etc but I'm a dud geek, can you tell me how to do this?

Re: MY Phono 3 has started bop bopping

Hi Richard, I'm confused now (doesn't take a lot!) The assembly instructions says WDPhono3 and there is nothing in them regarding selecting filters.

Re: MY Phono 3 has started bop bopping

Thanks Bob, I'll try that hopefully without ending up in the great HiFi DIY in the sky! As you can see from my previous post I ended up stripping the PSU3 down and rebuilding it without success....

Re: MY Phono 3 has started bop bopping

Hi Richard,
On my Phono3 the one that you are referring to is C17 not C20, anyway yes I did change it and it made no difference so just to be on the safe side I've changed it again.
I've now...

Re: MY Phono 3 has started bop bopping

Hi Bob,
Firstly the sound is now coming equally from both channels. Maybe points towards a problem with the PSU?
Regarding the PSU3, the only changes I made from the original was to upgrade the...
