Hub gears, there are three makes Richard, Sturmey archer - 5 speed and 8 speed, Shimano - 8 and 11 and Rohloff - 14 speed, all are epicyclic planetary gears, the SA now made in Taiwan, is the cheaper option, the Shimano between 250 to 500 and Rohloff around 1800, the latter comes with cable or hydraulic gear change, the only down side to all these is weight, derailleur now comes in compact 12 speed giving 500%, only one front chain ring, but pricy to keep running as they only last around a year. I miss biking and running, having got back from a run a few years back I found that I was unable to run any more the knees had packed in.

I have a gym in the garden so now it's the upper body, pull-ups in the snow, barbell frozen to the grass, the joy of fresh air and feeling alive.

Chris.
