Hi, now that I have taken the active components out of my system I need to control the kel84 power amp.
I have 50k and 100k blue Alps pots. Is there any preference as to which I should use please. ![]()

I used a 50k alps, both shunted and straight, quite happily on the front of my kat6550 until I went active with a pre3

Hi John
I'd go with 100K it's what was standard on my kel84

thinking about it, I seem to remember that Peter C did change it to 50K when he started WD, so if your's is a WD one then 50K is right

Either will work as well.
It's a high input resistance so theres no worries. I've even had great results with a passive pre that used a 10k pot. |

Interested to hear how you found the difference between the active and passive? I'm running an active pre currently, and been thinking of moving to a passive for ages but never got around to it. My experience a long time ago, was not that favourable towards passives, but I have an open mind and would welcome any feedback on passive pre's feeding the KaT6550. Cheers, Neil.

Hi, I always prefer just a good quality volume pot.
I don't understand why a pre-amp is required with all it's circuitry when the signal from the cd player is a couple of volts, easily enough. Only record decks would need pre-amplification and I'm sure that a small dedicated simple amplifier could bring it's signal up to line level. My kel 84 just has an Alps and my DIY Ferrograph amp has just a blue Alps. Simple is always best ![]() ![]()

Impedance matching is a big part of it.
A zero gain buffer could be a good idea if CD is your source.
