Default KEL84XL build

I'm on holiday in Devon and only 55mins drive from Matthew/WD in Totnes so decided to get the kit and try to build it in 2-3 days with the hope I could take it back to him for testing...and then the snow!

I'm hoping that the 'rush-to-build' hasn't resulted in any errors, but I would ask anyone with some time and patience to look at some pics and to please tell me if they can espy any mistakes.

The cable ties have been left off deliberately and a new hole needs to be drilled in the chassis front so that the ALPS pot lug can be seated now that there's a daughter pcb on top.

I made two stupid (cosmetic -I hope) errors. For some reason I cut two leads off the black caps and they are thus squashed down on some other components.

Matthew Snell has been an absolute delight to deal with -polite, courteous and very helpful.

Thanks!

edit: I can't post the pics yet as I need to resize them manually; will try later.

I have tried but the resultant pics are so small that meaningful detail will be missing. If any kind soul wishes to help than please PM me and perhaps I can email them.

You may need to alter the picture size on your camera to suit the forum. Im sure some one will be more helpful. BOB

Hi everyone,
These are the pictures from Bonky (aka Richard).
Please give them a 'once over' for him.

It looks to me like you have the ground wire (black) connected to the wrong speaker post, but can't see if you have the red post at the top or bottom, all the red posts normally live at the bottom. If I am correct, you will have a dead short on the output transformers. BOB

Hi;all sorted!

Matthew spotted the incorrect earth wire before any harm was done (Bob, (belated birthday wishes btw), you must have eyes like a hawk as I didn't see it - and it was my amp and my picture).

I'd also missed a wire off the vol pot pcb. All internal voltages were within spec.

Matthew was most kind. Now I need to get home and give it a 'soak-test.

Thanks again.

A query...

I have just plugged the KEL84 amp to my 2nd system (cheaper speakers!). All fires up OK.

However, no sound is heard from either speaker until both the RCA phono pins and outer screen are properly pushed in. Is this normal? (I was expecting that the pins were carrying the signal and the screen to be preventing RF).

Thanks..

Richard,

All electrical devices need a circuit to operate.
Would you expect a torch to light up if you only connected the positive end of the battery?

Phil.

No Phil, of course not, but (and it could be my memory playing me false here), other amps/connects haven't worked in the same way.

Thanks.
