Hello Terry,
The diode noise being coupled onto the HT sound a more likely route to me as well, i was trying to describe the effect on sound quality in my post rather than the means.

I know what you mean, I incorporated the heater mod from the start with the 84, having found it an improvment with the 6550, I find it hard to describe what is better, but it is.
