Default KEL 84 for sale

Finally getting rid, but before I do I wanted to guage the interest in it wired as a power-amp. Can convert to integrated, but would prefer not to. What do you think?

For those who went to a couple of Witham Fests this was the killer amp that drove Maggies wonderfully. Every possible upgrade has been done to this, plus many boutique components added.

Best

Adrian

Hi Adrian,

Did you get any interest?

Yes, one chap asked about it. Here's the description of the amp

Iíve had this amp for c.14yrs, built by the guy I bought it from but thoroughly overhauled by me

These are the changes Iíve made to the standard amp.

1 Itís wired as a power amp with flying leads (and therefore has no volume control or selector switch). Running the KEL84 in tis way is recommended to minimise hum, but it would be very easy to reconvert it to an integrated amp.

2. Virtually all components have been changed:

a. Power supply caps are 2 x Rifa 470uF and 1 x BHC ALC 10 220uF
b. Many resistors are Kiwame, some silver mica
c. Coupling caps are 4 x Jensen paper-in-oil, 2 x AudioNote (aluminium foil, silver lead-out) paper-in-oil
d. Small electrolytics are ELNA Silmic II
e. C22 is an LCR electrolytic

3. Most of the mods recommended on the WAD or WD forum have been done, along with others:

a Bridge rectifier replaced by 4 x IN5822 soft recovery rectifiers
b Diodes 1-4 are now STTA512D ultra-fast high voltage
c improved DC heater supply
d lowered feedback
e 4 x 100pF silver micas caps across R16/17/18/19
f many caps by-passed, eg with Vishay Roederstein MKP 1837

4, Valves are 2 x Mullard E80CF (an improved version of the ECF80 that came as standard); 4 x Russian EL84 (6P14P) which I prefer to the supplied Edicron and matched quad of Ei EL84 I previously used.

Priced at £350, but sensible offers considered

Adrian, your initial post asked if power was preferable to integrated for your sale.

As a recent buyer I read both your post and Alís and it was the fact Alís was integrated which made me select Alís.

Yours has some nice components :-)

But

I would prefer to switch an integrated to power than vice versa.

Thanks. Very helpful. You are not alone in saying that. I have the parts and will get on with making it an integrated again as soon as I get a chance.

For now, it is not for sale

I'm probably different in that it's not the integrated that I'm looking for - more the power amp.. The only offputting thing for me is that the holes for the controls are empty. Putting the switch and volume controls in place but not connected would be a better option as a power amp.
Maybe I'm odd?

You are concerned with visual aesthetics. I get that completely and would agree, leaving the switches and nobs in place but unconnected would be preferable.

Our Admin Matthew can supply a front panel for the KEL power amp, IE, no holes. BOB

... oh no, I can't! I have some old style panels with "volume only" and a few old style ones that are true "integrated" (two holes). New style I have only "integrated".

The KEL84 PA version was idiosyncratic in that it was always supplied with the passive volume control. Don't ask me why - it was before my time!

If enough people were interested it would be straightforward to produce a new style version with just the logo and LED drilling. But I'd suggest a minimum order of ten pieces might be realistic.

It's always worth asking ...

Cheers,

Matthew
