Four things...

The use of the word spontaneous. "the crowd jumped into spontaneous applause". Spontaneous means 'without cause' and doenst just mean instantly

The way on the radio that the present comes out of an interview and always always always says "thank you very much ... [little half a second break while he/she sorts out his notes] ... INDEED". Is there really any need to say "indeed". My selective hearing filters some of them out but once i notice the first one of the day thats it, i notice the next 129 too!

And people who call a radio a wireless. Please people get with the times!

Old people (above 50 i find) who cannot use PC's at work and expect me to pull them out of the poo when they say loudly in the office "where has my document gone? oh no its gone isnt it, ive lost it forever" and then start to panic. Old people should not be allowed to use computers. Knitting for the women and crown green bowls for the men and thats it!

Young people (under fifty, I find) who don't know when not to use an apostrophe.

Ah, that chestnut.

I find that Southerners tend to use all three 'A' sounds.
We use the 'round a' as in face and place.
We use the 'hard a' in words with hard vowels following the A, for example rat and pack.
But we also use the 'soft a' in words with soft vowels following the A, for example pass and bath.

So, Southerners have a greater variation of sounds and don't mind sounding soft.
Northerners have a simplified version of speech and like to sound hard whenever possible.
