Default Tannoy Gold

A young family member has rescued four Tannoy Gold 15" Dual Concentric HPD/385/8 loudspeakers from being thrown into a skip. One is the bare driver unit, but three are in the original cabinets and with the crossover units. Does anybody know what kind of deterioration or failure is probable in these speakers? I've read somewhere that the crossover components are the most likely to need replacement, but it may be that the cones are past their best. If they could be got to work, what sort of amplifier would be a good match?

By coincidence, I saw in the Coffee Bar section of the Forum that Tannoy are closing down production, though it seems that what they were producing was a far cry from the glory days that these units represent.

Hello Edwin,

Just for clarity, HPD drivers are not the same as "Monitor Gold", they are the next generation. They are still highly sought after though so well done.

The main issue with HPDs is the foam surrounds rotting but they are repairable and it is well worth doing so.
As for amps, most people would say medium power valve amps, say 15 to 40 wpc.
It is very worth while upgrading the x-over but there are no electrolytics in them so they can be used as is.

Phil.

Well who's a lucky man then Edwin, I looked longingly at a pair of Tannoy Berkeley's in the late 70's that were on demo in a local Hi-Fi shop, Sound Quality, sadly, long gone, the sound was fantastic, they are still around and no doubt still sound good. BOB

Hi Edwin.

Tannoys are crap, but I'll take them off your hands for a tenner.

Just to clarify, the speakers aren't mine, but remain in the hands of their rescuer. I'm encouraging him to join this forum, but in the meantime I said I would tap its collective wisdom.

Phil

I've found a recent account by somebody who upgraded a pair of these LS. This included dismantling the units and spray-painting the horns after cleaning them. It also included the crossovers, and the writer lists electrolytic capacitors. Could it be that the crossovers were re-designed during the production run?

Hello Edwin,
That article is about Monitor Gold drivers. As I said in my earlier post, HPD drivers are not the same as Monitor Golds. HPDs are later than MGs and don't have electrolytic caps.

Phil.

PS Have a look here Edwin http://www.44bx.com/tannoy/Cabinets2.html
