Hi again all,
Looking at Richards sketch of the mains suppressor circuit ,does the delta capacitor have polarity or does it make no difference which way it is connected to the IEC plug.

Thanks once again for all your assistance

X caps and Y caps are not polarity conscious.

They are special for 240v mains use.

Hi Geoff,

Using a delta cap is the elegant way to do it because it encapsulates two 'Y' caps and one 'X' cap in one unit so all you need is the delta cap and a varistor to make the filter. This helps with space saving and less work. However, be clear that with three legs it is a polarised component one leg each for Earth, Nuetral and Live. It should be clearly marked on the casing near the pin outs. The varistor connected between L and N pin outs is not polarised.

This is what I made, it was in Hi-Fi World mag's DIY projects some time back, it feeds all but my LP12, the chokes are still available from RS Components, and it works. BOB

Bob, have you tried listening WITHOUT the filter lately ?

It is in the article, but I know some say such devices "rob" the music in some small way.

Greg/Bob,
Thank you both for the info, Bob I might look into your mains filter suggestion it certainly looks interesting, Greg I have in front of me a Rifa PZB 300 part No from RS as per Richards instructions and nowhere can I find any reference to polarity hence my original query.
Thanks for all your interest

Hi Geoff, looking at the RS data sheet for part no 239 668, the centre pin is ground, then live on one side and neutral on the other, because the capacitors ARE NON POLARISED, it matters not which outer pin you use. Philip's post has also stated that these capacitors are non polarized. Greg, may be thinking of something else. BOB
